Education
LALDEF organizes
community events and
educational programs
and it develops materials
to educate the public at
large to recognize the barriers and difficulties faced by newcomers as they struggle to integrate into, contribute to and
be accepted into our society.
These programs rely primarily on the services of community volunteers, and recognized experts. Through these
programs we expect that the community at large will become more appreciative of the cultural diversity and economic
contributions that are brought by immigrants and embrace their presence.
In addition, LALDEF distributes the "Folleto de Informacion ", a Spanish-language community resource handbook, edited
by the Latin American Task Force of Princeton. Thousands of copies of the Folleto have been distributed since 1989 to new
Spanish-speaking residents of Hightstown, Trenton, Lawrenceville and the Princeton to educate Hispanic newcomers about
their rights and responsibilities as neighbors, and to help ease the process of integrating these immigrants into our
communities.Newcomers will learn how our society works by reading pertinent sections when they apply for an apartment
lease, look for day care or medical services, or go about learning English.
Latino Reform Youth Council (LRYC)
LRYC was founded by Moses Santizo, a Princeton-raised child of Guatemalan immigrants, to create a supportive and
self-affirming environment for Latino students enrolled in high-schools and colleges through our area. Research shows
that Latino youths with a clear awareness of their identity, and knowledge about the history and culture of their
countries of origin are more likely to succeed in the United States and face lower risks of ending up in trouble.
LRYC’s
goal is to bring together
young people to discuss their
collective heritage and develop
a strong identity as both
Latinos and
Americans. Through retreats,
field-trips, dialogue, and
mutual reinforcement, LRYC
contributes to the
social wellbeing
and educational progress of
the new Latino community.
Approximately 25 youngsters
are currently
participating
in this effort. Thanks to
a grant from the Mary Owen
Borden Foundation, LALDEF
was able to sponsor the
LRYC youth
leadership retreat which was
held in November 2006 at the
Burlington Meeting House (see
November events
page for more information),
and will continue to support
the development of future
LRYC programs.
